1. Consider your content.
You’re about to post about last night’s antics, does it make you cringe typing it out or looking at those pictures again? Then maybe don’t post it. Try to steer clear of anything too topical, such as political views, offensive memes that are shared ‘for a joke’, or just plain controversial conversation. This seems pretty obvious, but around 54% of employers did not hire certain candidates when they found that they had posted unsuitable photos.

2. Ditch the freshers’ week photos.
A large part of your online profiles are your pictures, so make sure they are appropriate to be seen by everyone. This starts with profile pictures. Try and make them as professional as possible (particularly on LinkedIn) and that they reflect the industry you want to work in. Take the time to untag yourself from any photos you haven’t posted, but could negatively impact the employer’s opinion of you, especially those which need forgetting!

3. Show personality.
Making your social media profile private to avoid negative thoughts from a potential employer can actually have a negative impact on an employer’s perception. Employers are searching because they want more information and a deeper understanding of the person, not just their CV, so don’t prevent them from viewing your profile. Post what you are interested in and have appropriate discussions on the platforms, just ensure you show the positive aspects of your personality!

4. LinkedIn is essential.
LinkedIn offers a graduate looking to begin their career endless benefits and possibilities to explore. As a platform, it enables graduates to connect with influential people in any field and understand their journey. It allows potential employers to view your relevant experience and education too, with 93% of employers stating they look at an applicant’s LinkedIn profile before an interview. However, the key for a graduate is to engage with their connections regularly and maintain a presence. Keeping a LinkedIn profile and having a dialogue with employers and experts in your field could help secure that first graduate role.

5. The DEEP CLEAN
Make sure your social media reflects the employee you want them to see, whilst maintaining your personality. Social media platforms can provide an excellent facility for you to brand yourself and showcase your talents. However, it can also be the thing that is preventing you from starting your career. In order to prevent this from happening, give your social media sites a thorough deep clean and put your best foot forward.
