ONS Production Output Report: January 2025
This summary is based on information from the Office for National Statistics’ Index of Production, UK: November 2024, highlighting recent trends in the UK’s production industries, including manufacturing, mining and quarrying, energy supply, and water and waste management.
In November 2024, the UK’s production output decreased by 0.4%, marking the third consecutive monthly fall after a 0.3% decrease in September and 0.6% in October. This decrease was primarily driven by manufacturing (down 0.3%), mining and quarrying (down 1.5%) and water supply and sewage (down 0.3%). These were slightly offset by an increase of 0.2% in electricity and gas.
The monthly decrease saw decreases in 7 of its 13 manufacturing subsectors. The most notable decreases in November 2024 came from “other manufacturing and repair”, “basic pharmaceutical products” and “transport equipment” which dipped by 2.1%, 1.9% and 0.9%, respectively.
Marking the seventh consecutive three-monthly fall since the three months to April 2024, production output for the three months to November 2024 was estimated to have dropped by 0.7%. “Manufacturing” was the main contributor to this fall with 1.0%, partially offset by an increase in “electricity and gas” and “mining and quarrying”, with 0.5% and 0.3% respectively.
To summarise, in November 2024, the UK’s production output fell by 0.4%, driven by declines in manufacturing, mining, and water supply, partially offset by growth in electricity and gas. Over the three months to November, output dropped by 0.7%, with manufacturing being the main contributor to the decline.
