Showcasing Caroline Haslam
We wanted to hear from the Women we knew in the Construction industry and feature them throughout social media to help promote and support this Women In Construction Week 2021.
The focus for Women in Construction (WIC) Week is to highlight women as a viable component of the construction industry. With that in mind, we reached out to Caroline and this is what she had to say…
Q. Who/what inspired you to choose a career in the construction industry?
“I had been working as a specialist painter in France, on return to England I needed a job. I applied for a role as a tenant liaison officer. The company wanted construction experience but were happy with my work in France as experience. I was then recommended to another company, which was the one who inspired me to work in construction. They gave me the skill set I needed and allowed me to work in many areas of the industry.“
Q. What was your route into construction?
“My route into the construction industry was via applying for a Tenant Liaison Officer, then moving from that role over to a Construction company who ignited my passion for the industry”
Q. What year did you begin your career in construction?
“I began my career in the construction industry in 1990. So I have been in the industry for 31 years.“
Q. What is your favourite part of working in the construction industry?
“My favourite part of working within the construction industry is the variety of people you get to meet”
Q. What do you find your biggest challenge as a woman in the construction industry?
“Getting PPE to fit. I have never felt any different being a woman in the industry. I have had nothing but support throughout my career.“
Q. What advice would you give other women wanting to enter the construction industry?
“Please don’t let social conditioning put you off entering the construction industry and try various roles before you decide what area of construction you want to progress your career in. You get to build the hospital people are born in, the roads to their first homes and even the places they work. Every day will be different and you will meet people from all walks of life. Construction is an amazing industry to work in.“
We’d like to thank Caroline for her contribution and it has been a pleasure hearing about her experience in the Construction industry.
