'Construction Output Sees 1.9% Growth in May 2024' - July ONS Report
In the ONS Construction Output June report, May 2024 saw the construction industry in Great Britain experience a significant recovery with an estimated monthly output growth of 1.9% in volume terms, following a revised decline of 1.1% in April 2024. This resurgence is attributed to increases in both new work and repair and maintenance activities, recording 2.7% and 0.8% growth, respectively.
Sector Growth Highlights
The warmer weather in May, confirmed by the Met Office as the warmest on record, played a crucial role in boosting construction activities. Eight out of nine sectors reported growth, with notable contributions from:
- Total New Housing: Increased by 2.8%, encompassing both private and public new housing projects.
Infrastructure New Work: Rose significantly by 3.5%.
Non-Housing Repair and Maintenance: Saw a growth of 2.1%.
Quarterly Performance
Despite the positive monthly performance, the construction output fell by 0.7% over the three months leading to May 2024. This decline stemmed from a 0.9% reduction in new work and a 0.3% decrease in repair and maintenance activities.
May 2024 marks a notable rebound for the construction industry in Great Britain, driven by favourable weather conditions and sector-wide growth. However, the quarterly data indicates a need for continued vigilance and adaptation within the industry to sustain and build on this positive momentum.
