Manufacturing Dips Slightly in Q2, but Monthly Gains Show Resilience - August ONS Report

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) recently released its Index of Production Report for August 2024, highlighting mixed trends in the UK’s production output. The report provides a comprehensive overview of the performance of key sectors, including manufacturing, electricity and gas, and water supply and sewerage. The data reveals both challenges and positive developments across the industry, offering valuable insights for stakeholders and decision-makers.

Summary of Key Findings

Quarterly Analysis

For Quarter 2 (April to June) 2024, the overall production output in the UK experienced a modest decline of 0.1% compared to Quarter 1 (January to March) 2024. The primary contributor to this decrease was the manufacturing sector, which saw a contraction of 0.6%. However, this was somewhat counterbalanced by growth in the water supply and sewerage (up 2.2%) and electricity and gas (up 2.5%) sectors.

Monthly Analysis

Despite the quarterly downturn, the monthly data paints a more optimistic picture. Production output in June 2024 increased by 0.8%, following a 0.3% rise in May and a 1.0% fall in April. The uptick in June was driven by a 1.1% rise in manufacturing output, bolstered by significant gains in electricity and gas (1.6%) and water supply and sewerage (0.2%). Notably, manufacturing growth was broad-based, with 9 out of 13 subsectors showing improvements.

Sectoral Insights

Manufacture of Basic Metals and Metal Products

This subsector saw a robust increase of 2.6%, contributing positively to the overall manufacturing output.

Manufacture of Machinery and Equipment

This sector posted a notable growth of 3.9%, reflecting strong demand and production activity.

Manufacture of Transport Equipment

With a 1.5% increase, this sector also played a crucial role in the overall manufacturing performance.

On the downside, the “other manufacturing and repair” subsector experienced a 0.6% decline, marking the largest negative impact on manufacturing growth in June 2024.

The latest ONS Index of Production Report underscores the complexity of the UK’s industrial landscape. While the manufacturing sector struggled in the second quarter of 2024, the monthly figures from June suggest a degree of resilience, with notable contributions from key manufacturing subsectors. The positive momentum in June’s production output could signal a recovery trend as we move into the latter half of the year.
