Dealing with end of year exams

Your time at university is ending and you can see the finish line, but in front of you lays one final hurdle…YOUR EXAMS!

Between now and your final exam, there will be days you find easier and those that present challenges. One of the key things to remember is that you will get through it! Students across the country will be in a similar position so remember to support each other, share best practices, and stay positive.

We have created a list of tips you might find useful in the lead-up to your exams…

Make a plan.

Although immediately getting your head down and beginning with revision may seem the best approach, take time to step back and create a plan. Your plan should consider realistic targets regarding covering a set number of topics per day. By breaking topics down, you can control what you must revise and help your brain process the workload more effectively.

A lot of your time will be spent revising, so try and create a meal plan or even consider cooking meals in advance to allow more time to revise. In your plan, try to consider mealtimes and non-revision activities such as exercise too. Going for a run may seem crazy with less than a month to go, but exercise can be a welcome distraction and can help clear your head to focus again.

You’re not alone!

Sitting in the library for prolonged periods can leave you feeling lonely, so try and revise with housemates or others on your course to keep yourself feeling positive. Revising topics within a group is a fantastic way of improving your knowledge or confirming knowledge you already had. Our partner brand olano have written a useful guide on learning from others which you can read here

There will be times when you need support from others too. Friends and family will be there to help you through this last semester, so make sure to utilise that!

A good night’s sleep works wonders.

This sounds obvious, but don’t fall into temptation to stay in the library for as long as possible. Have a lie in and don’t feel guilty to rush straight back to the books.

However, within your revision plan you must allow yourself the time to have a decent amount of sleep at night. It has been proven that when we have more sleep, our ability to stay focused and not get distracted is much higher. Sleep also has a direct connection to our emotional well-being, as we are more likely to react negatively when feeling deprived of sleep. We totally understand that you feel you do not have time to treat yourself to a long night’s sleep, but it will boost your revision efforts massively!

In years to come, you will look back at these next couple of weeks with the satisfaction that all your hard work paid off and you hold something you should be very proud of! However, we hope that our guidance offers a helping hand as you come to the end of your university experience.
