Showcasing Emma Spencer

We wanted to hear from the Women we knew in the Construction industry and feature them throughout social media to help promote and support this Women In Construction Week 2021.

The focus for Women in Construction (WIC) Week is to highlight women as a viable component of the construction industry. With that in mind, we reached out to Emma and this is what she had to say…

Q. Who/what inspired you to choose a career in the construction industry?

“I didn’t look for a job in Construction but just a job to earn my own money. However, I ended up working for a company, where there was only myself, two Directors and 200 Sub Contractors. I loved it, I loved learning, loved the industry and decided this was the industry I would carry on my career”

Q. What year did you begin your career in construction?

“I have worked in construction since I left school almost 28 years ago in 1994”

Q. What do you find your biggest challenge as a woman in the construction industry?

“As a woman in construction, you have to work hard to prove yourself and gain respect from the industry in general”

Q. What is your favourite part of working in the construction industry?

“I have covered all aspects over the years, Buying, Plant Management and Accounts. I love the fact that I know the products inside out and it gives me great satisfaction that my hard work has rewarded me by being recognised within the industry”

Q. What advice would you give other women wanting to enter the construction industry?

“I would encourage any ladies interested in potentially working within the construction industry to just GO FOR IT. It will come with its challenges but the rewards you will reap are well worth it.”

We’d like to thank Emma for her contribution and it has been a pleasure hearing about her experience in the Construction industry.
